All Black Is Not the Same Black

On the range of Blackness, the absurdity of flattening it, and why that logic applies to everything we build.

I love being Black.

Not in the abstract. Not as a political stance. I love the actual experience of it. The range of it, the contradictions, the way it refuses to sit still long enough for anyone to define it.

I'm Trini black. I own that because I am it, not because I live it every day. I'm also code-switching black. City black. Grew-up-around-white-people black. Read-too-many-books black. Not-cool-enough-to-warrant-this-black black. I've sat in rooms where I was too Black for the context and rooms where I wasn't Black enough for the conversation. Sometimes the same room.

I know HBCU black and I know immigrant black. I know church-on-Sunday black and I know never-been-to-church black. I know loud-and-unapologetic black and I know quiet-and-watching black. I know all of these are real. I know none of them are the whole thing.

Which version would you even put under warranty?


The Warranty Problem

There's this thing that happens, in workplaces, in culture, in the way systems are designed, where Blackness gets treated like it needs to come with terms and conditions. Prove you belong. Perform the right version. Check the right box. Meet the standard.

But there is no standard. That's not a problem. That's the entire point.

You can't make someone prove their humanity when their humanity contains multitudes. The warranty assumes a single product. We're not a single product. We never were. Nobody earns Blackness. Nobody loses it. It's not conditional. It just is. And it is wildly, beautifully varied.

When I catch myself thinking I don't deserve this or I'm not cool enough to warrant this black, I know what I'm actually doing. I'm using the language of worthiness against myself. But Blackness doesn't work that way. It's not a credential you qualify for. It's not a performance you maintain. It's a fact that happens to contain an extraordinary amount of range.


Why This Matters When We Build

Here's where the personal becomes professional.

Large language models are trained on text written by, for, and about certain kinds of people. When that text describes "Black culture," it reaches for the civil rights movement, hip-hop, soul food, church. It's not wrong. But it's describing a subset as if it were the totality.

The model sees a category. We are not a category.

The same logic that says "all Black is one Black" says "all your people should think the same way." It says a workforce should be legible, manageable, predictable. It says diversity is something you add to a team like a seasoning, not something the team is made of at a structural level.

You can't flatten Blackness into one thing. And you can't flatten your workforce into one way of seeing and expect to survive what's coming.

This is not an argument against the technology. It is an argument for building these systems, and organizations, with the humility to admit that the training data doesn't contain what it doesn't contain. And that what's missing matters.


The Specific Stakes

I've seen medical systems that perform significantly worse on darker skin tones. Hiring algorithms that penalize names that don't read as Western European. Credit scoring models that encode decades of redlining into their output without ever mentioning race explicitly.

These systems are not neutral. They never were.

The fix isn't better stock photos in your marketing. The fix is who's in the room when design decisions get made. What communities are consulted during testing. What assumptions are baked into the data collection itself. The fix is structural, and it starts with admitting that one way of seeing produces one way of building. And that's not enough.


The Point

The diversity of Blackness is the argument against the warranty. It always was.

And the diversity of perspective, real diversity, not the kind you put in a deck, is the argument against building systems that only see one version of anything.

The personal and the professional are making the exact same point.

All Black is not the same Black. The sooner we build like we understand that, the better everything gets.
